It started in 1878, when community leaders realized the importance of having a theater in DeWitt for its citizens. Then, in 1979, when the theater was almost torn down because of disrepair, the community recognized the devastating impact if they were to lose their historical theater. The Operahouse was started by the community and saved the community. Now, even though the Operahouse is alive and well, we still face challenges to keep the theater operational. That’s where your thoughtful donation can help.

WHO ARE WE?

It’s hard to find someone in the community who doesn’t have a fond memory of the Operahouse – first movie, performing in a play, attending a travelogue, watching a dance recital. The DeWitt Operahouse Theatre has been providing entertainment to DeWitt and surrounding communities continuously since 1878.

The Operahouse is best known for showing current movies at affordable prices. It attracts patrons from over 41 different counties in Iowa and Illinois. The Operahouse is a venue for many private and community events. The original stage is still used as a performance space for local musicians and entertainers.

We are also home to the First Central State Bank Gallery which showcases local artists’ work throughout the year.

WHY IS YOUR DONATION IMPORTANT?

The DeWitt Operahouse Theatre is overseen by The DeWitt Theater Company, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with a local board of directors.

While income from ticket sales and concessions pay for day-to-day operating expenses and employee wages, the preservation fund is essential in the upkeep and continuing operation of the 140-year-old building. It also helps keep ticket prices and concessions affordable.

It’s hard to imagine our community without the Operahouse. By joining the Operahouse Circle of Friends, you will ensure that never happens.

Thank you for your donation and for being an integral part of our success!
